2019 UAF Summer Music Academy Courses.

8:30 – 9:25am and 9:30 – 10:30am
The first two morning classes will be assigned based on your instrument and your audition results.


10:40-11:35am

Please indicate your preference of class for this hour, keeping in mind that you may be placed into sectionals or rhythm theory based on your audition results.

Choices

  • 01

    Jazz Band
    Open to all students who have an interest in jazz music. Jazz Band is a large ensemble made up of Brass, Woodwinds, & rhythm (bass, keyboard, percussion) instruments.

  • 02

    World Beat
    Open to all students. Explore of rhythm & drumming. Students can help create their own rhythms and songs using a variety of drums & drumming techniques.

  • 03

    Concert Choir
    This is an advanced choir. Students will perform classical choral works with SMA faculty, staff, & mentors.

  • 04

    Chamber Music (Strings)
    Students are placed in chamber music classes based on audition and instrument. In a chamber music section you will have opportunities to play one to a part with no conductor while receiving regular coaching from one of our faculty. Participating in chamber music is a great way to develop your musicianship.

    Low Strings Technique Class
    Open to all bass & cello students. This class will focus on improving your playing technique.

  • 06

    Handbell Choir
    Handbell ringing is great fun but requires teamwork. This course is designed for students who have good music reading skills (reading both treble and bass clef is helpful, but not required). Students will receive instruction in basic ringing, malleting, and other bell ringing techniques.

    Piano Lessons/Practice
    This is for anyone interested in learning a new skill or working on skills you have already learned. The instructors will work with each student at his/her own pace.

  • 08

    Rhythm Theory
    Understanding how to count rhythmic patterns is a basic requirement for musicians. This class will give you the information you need in order to become an accomplished musician.

  • 09

    Beginning Guitar
    Open to all students, no prior experience needed, but you must have your own guitar. This class will provide an introduction to playing guitar in a wide range of popular styles. We will cover tuning, open position chords, scales, progressions, and accompaniment in the context of popular music.

  • 01

    Academy Orchestra (By audition only)
    This orchestra is for advanced students who will perform with Academy faculty, staff, and mentors. If you choose this option, be sure to choose a second option in case you don’t audition into the group.

  • 02

    Show Choir- (It’s All About Glee!)
    This ensemble will perform various styles of music, including Broadway show tunes, pop, and jazz. This is a group of strong singers who will also utilize dance and movement.

  • 03

    Jazz Combo
    Open to all students interested in jazz music. This small ensemble will create more intimate jazz music than the larger jazz band.

  • 04

    Flute Choir
    Open to flute students. This ensemble is entirely made up of instruments within the flute family. You will play a variety of styles and techniques alongside faculty, staff, & mentors.

    Brass Choir
    Open to brass students. This ensemble is entirely made up of instruments within the brass family (trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba, etc). You will play a variety of styles and techniques alongside faculty, staff, & mentors.

    Reed Choir
    Open to reed students. This ensemble is entirely made up of instruments within the reed family (clarinet, saxophone, etc). You will play a variety of styles and techniques alongside faculty, staff, & mentors.

    Class Piano
    This is for anyone interested in learning a new skill or working on skills you have already learned. The instructors will work with each student at his/her own pace.

  • 08

    Music Theory
    Everything you need to know about basic music fundamentals and beginning music theory. If you need review or more practice on music basics, this class will work for you, too. You might be assigned to this class based on your audition.

  • 09

    Beginning Ukulele
    This class is open to all students; you must bring your own ukulele. No experience required. This will be an introduction to playing ukulele in a wide range of popular styles. The class will cover tuning, chords, scales, progressions, and right hand technique while strumming away to your favorite songs!

    Celtic Music
    Open to all instruments. Explore the many varieties and sounds of Celtic music from Ireland, Scotland, and beyond. Various types of tunes will be taught by ear while students learn about the history of Celtic music as well as the ornaments, stylistic elements, and history that make this type of music unique.

  • 02

    Folk Dance
    Open to all students. In this class, students will be on their feet learning a variety of folk-style dances. This class will collaborate with the Celtic music class.

  • 03

    Jazz Combo
    Open to all students interested in jazz music. This small ensemble will create more intimate jazz music than the larger jazz band.

  • 04

    Percussion Ensemble
    A workshop in music at the cutting edge. Students will be instructed and coached in contemporary music written by composers such as Steve Reich, John Cage, Nigel Westlake, Dan Levitan, and Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic. An introduction to music written especially for percussion!

    If you love musicals, then come sing and dance with us to your favorite tunes from Broadway!

    This small, amplified, ensemble will explore popular music styles such as rock, pop, country, etc.
